THE LIBERTY SCIENCE CENTER

Last week, Julia, Brendan and I met up with a college friend of mine and her two children to check out one of the places on our 101 Things to Do This Summer List, The Liberty Science Center in New Jersey.

One could easily spend days exploring this museum; our 5 hour visit put merely a dent in all there is to see and do. With four floors of interactive exhibits to discover, Imax movies, Tesla Lightning Show, the Touch Tunnel and more, there is truly something for everyone.

Our crew loved the sensory challenges in
The Infinity Climber, The Touch Tunnel and the Skyscraper. The Infinity Climber (pictured above) is a suspended multi-story play space that you navigate by climbing, crawling and balancing your way through pathways as high as 35 feet above the atrium floor. Being afraid of heights and not feeling particularly brave on this day, I left the climbing to the little ones- all of whom returned to this no less than three times during our visit! The Touch Tunnel was perhaps the most popular exhibit of the day and while it seemed simple enough, it is not for the faint of heart! You have to navigate your way through an indoor tunnel, that twists and turns and is pitch-black!

Another favorite of ours was The Skyscraper Exhibition. Here you could experience life as an ironworker, stepping out on a narrow steel beam and walking 18 feet above the gallery floor.

We also learned about curtain walls, the outer skin that wraps around a skyscraper’s framework; we loaded wood chips with a real mini-excavator, and stacked blocks using an electromagnetic mini-crane.

The Action Zone, a high-tech training camp, was another favorite of this group. Here, they tested their sports skills with a state-of-the-art simulator that lets you pass a football, toss a dodgeball at zombies, boot a soccer ball, and more. They also loved scrambling up a rotating climbing wall.

Our final stop was Our Hudson Home, where the kids spent spent most of their time at The Harbor Tank, viewing the river’s natural and human-made environments and the creatures that make them their home.

In short, this was a super fun day for all! The views of Manhattan were an added bonus and the kids can't wait to go back to explore more! For more information about The Liberty Science Center and to buy tickets in advance go to http://lsc.org/.
