MACARONI REVIEW: SEATTLE CHILDREN'S THEATRE'S ROBIN HOOD

Performances @ The New Victory Theater through October 11th

October 8, 2015
On Saturday Night, the New Victory Theater's 20th Season opened with Seattle Children's Theatre's Robin Hood and Julia and I were lucky to have been invited for the grand "kick-off" of what has come to be our favorite children's theater venue in New York City.

The roughly one hour and forty-five minute performance of Robin Hood was one of the most enjoyable theatrical experiences we have ever had. I know we were not alone in this as evidenced by the giggles heard throughout and the smiles that accompanied both kids and adults alike, during and after the show.

What was it that made it so special? Perhaps it was the well-choreographed sword-fighting, or the unique opportunity for the audience to participate. It could have been the awesome sound effects/music or the well-written and simply hilarious script. Maybe it was the actors themselves, completely captivating and able to masterfully switch between roles. Most likely, it was a combination of all these things. Regardless, I highly recommend that you get to this show during the final weekend. You will not find better quality theater for a more affordable price!

From the press release:
The Prince of Thieves and his Merry Men do all the wrong things for all the right reasons! Fantastically funny and fast-paced,
this action-packed adventure features a Robin Hood with a tongue as sharp as his sword. Under the fly of arrows, and with some very clever quick changes, a versatile cast of four takes on more than a dozen roles to bring the legend of England’s famous outlaw to life. Originally commissioned and produced by Children’s Theatre Company (Minneapolis) and produced by special arrangement with Plays for Young Audiences, this presentation appeared on the Seattle Children’s Theatre stage in 2011 and returned by popular demand to close their 2014-15 season last May.

The New Victory presentation of Seattle Children’s Theatre’s Robin Hood marks the first theatrical adaptation about the medieval hero to return to the New York stage since 1944, when J.J. Shubert, Lee Shubert and R. H. Burnside produced an operetta of the same name at the Adelphi Theatre (a venue later known as the George Abbott Theatre, which was demolished in 1970).
